Prescriptions

Ordering repeat prescriptions

The easiest ways to order repeat prescriptions are:

  • using your NHS account (through the NHS website or in the NHS App)
  • using the GP online system: SystmOnline
  • tick items you require on your copy of the prescription request form (white slip) and post it in surgery reception by the check in screen.
  • fill in a yellow order form available at surgery reception. You will need to provide medication details and patient contact details. Post in the box by the ‘check in’ screen in reception.
  • fill in and post your prescription request form (white slip) to the surgery. Please include a stamped, address envelope.

These accounts show you all your repeat medicine and dosage and you can choose the ones you need.

You can also:

Patients on regular medication will be given a repeat prescription slip when you collect your medication. This is the white slip on the right hand side of your green prescription. Please note prescriptions are issued for 28 days only.

If you need a repeat you do not necessarily have to see a doctor.

We do not take repeat prescription requests over the phone or email.

Collecting your prescription

Information:

You can usually collect your prescription 3 working days after you have ordered it.

Once your prescription request has been processed it will be available to be collected from surgery reception for you to take to a pharmacy.

You can also nominate a pharmacy which the prescription will be sent to and dispensed ready for collection. All pharmacies in Leighton Buzzard have signed up to this scheme and it is free.

Some pharmacies also operate a home delivery service. Please contact them directly for details and they will be happy to advise you.

Remember: If you feel unwell or have side effects when taking your medication please speak to your pharmacist for advice.

You will need to choose a pharmacy to collect your prescription from. We call this nominating a pharmacy.

You can change your nominated pharmacy at any time:

  • on the app or website where you order repeat prescriptions
  • fill out a nominate a pharmacy form
  • at any pharmacy that accepts repeat prescriptions

Questions about your prescription

If you have questions about your medicine, your local pharmacists can answer these. They can also answer questions on medicines you can buy without a prescription.

The NHS website has information on how your medicine works, how and when to take it, possible side effects and answers to your common questions.

If you would like to speak to someone at the GP surgery about your prescription:

Medication reviews

On the slip is a date for the doctor to review your current medication. Medication reviews will happen at least every 6 months. You should make an appointment at least 3 weeks before this date to avoid running out of medication. Failing to book your medication review when this is due could cause a delay on your medication requirements. It is important to ensure you book your medication review within the required time.

Please allow three full working days for prescriptions to be processed and remember to take weekends and bank holidays into account.

Prescription charges

Charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.

If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months, or more than 15 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC.

There is further information about prescription exemptions and fees on the NHS website.

What to do with old medicines

Take it to the pharmacy you got it from or bring it in to the surgery. Do not put it in your household bin or flush it down the toilet.

About pharmacists

As qualified healthcare professionals, pharmacists can offer advice on minor illnesses such as:

  • coughs
  • colds
  • sore throats
  • tummy trouble
  • aches and pains

They can also advise on medicine that you can buy without a prescription.

Find a pharmacy

Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You do not need an appointment.

Most pharmacies have a private room where you can discuss issues with pharmacy staff.
